Why is Improv Great for Team Building?

It’s not about being funny or quick-witted. It’s about exploring the most truthful and authentic aspects of yourself, and finding the unique core that makes you YOU! It’s about entering that journey in common cause with your teammates, supporting them and helping them do the same. The results are learning new skills or honing existing ones; discovering things about yourself and your colleagues; and forging richer ties with each other that extend into your workplace.

Improv is great for teaching and enhancing a wide range of skills:

  • Collaboration
  • Openness and generosity
  • Communication, listening and sharing
  • Presenting
  • Ideation and creativity
  • Confidence in your creations
  • Trust – in yourself and others
  • Mental flexibility
  • Positive mindset
  • The list goes on…!

What Can I Expect?

Events are 60-90 minutes, depending on the group size. Group are limited to 20 to ensure everyone has ample opportunity to participate. 90 minutes is highly recommended for groups of 10-14 and required for groups of 15+.

Each event is different and can be tailored to your needs and goals. Our improv instructor will lead your team through a curated series of games and exercises according to your stated objectives.

Here are some examples of games that may be played during an event. This is by no means an exhaustive list:

  • Convergence / Mind Meld: 2 people try to say the same word at the exact same time. They may be given a theme, category or nothing at all.
  • Pass the Story: Participants create a story from the same point of view only saying 2-3 words at a time before passing it on to the next person.
  • I am a Tree: The game begins with the phrase “I am a tree” and everyone adds something of their own to create a unique and multi-faceted the picture of the tree.
  • Life Story: Participants work in pairs and have 2 minutes to tell each other their life story . Then they decide what they want to share about each other to the rest of the group.
  • 3 Things: Participants list 3 things they need at that moment in time. The next person takes the last thing that was said and adds their own items to the list.
  • 5 Things: Participants list 5 items in a given category. Then they choose a new category and pass it on to the next person who does the same thing.

FAQs

+ BOOKING PROCESS

+How far in advance do I need to book?

You can book a virtual or hybrid event up to 48 hours in advance. You may check our real time availability in the “Book Now” widget. If your desired time isn’t available, or you  please schedule time with our event coordinators and we’ll see what we can do.

If you’d like to book an on-site event, our event coordinators can help with that as well!

+How does the event get scheduled?

Once you complete your booking for a virtual or hybrid event, you’ll automatically receive a confirmation with all of the details that you need for the event! We’ll provide a unique Zoom meeting room link, as well as instructions for you to share with your colleagues on how to setup Zoom.

For on-site events, we will do our best accommodate your needs. One of our event coordinators will work with you to coordinate timing, location, logistics and all other event details.

+Can you host with other video conferencing software for virtual and hybrid events?

We have a strong preference for Zoom because its breakout room function enables the smoothest experience. When necessary, we’ve hosted events on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Cisco WebEx for smaller groups, but they tend to have a slightly more clunky experience

+Can your event handle hybrid teams that are partly in-office and partly remote?

Yes, this event can handle hybrid teams. When you book, indicate that part of your team will be in the same physical space. One of our event coordinators will follow up with you to coordinate logistics.

+Can we work with you to customize the schedule?

Yes! If you have any special requests, please schedule time with our event coordinators

+Do you offer discounts?

If you have a tight budget, we’ll do our best to accommodate Please schedule time with our event coordinators to discuss

+ PREPARING FOR THE EVENT

+What do I need to do in advance?

For virtual and hybrid event, all you have to do is share this information from your confirmation email:

1) The unique Zoom meeting link

2) Instructions on how to download Zoom desktop with your team to make sure they’re properly set up to join the event

We handle the rest! There is no special prep or setup needed.

+Do you handle event registrations?

We do not handle event registrations at this time. We found that event registration was best handled by team and event organizers who have full context for the attendees. We’re happy to suggest ways to manage this process if helpful

+What type of setup do I need?

There is no special setup needed for virtual and hybrid events! This event can be performed by anyone, anywhere. Participants can be seated for the entire event or get on their feet, if they so choose.

+ ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY DETAILS

+What happens once the event starts?

Virtual and hybrid groups sign onto Zoom with our facilitators for a brief verbal intro. On-site groups will meet our improv instructor at your desired location. Our improv instructor will then introduce the first game, provide a brief demonstration and then invite the group to join in.

+How do you ensure that people don't feel awkward, and are engaged and participating?

It’s important to us that everyone participate in whatever way feels natural and comfortable for them, regardless of their skill-level, abilities or experience. Our improv instructor will emphasize this throughout the event. Participants are also welcome to turn off their cameras and mics for any portion of the event.

+Do you use breakout rooms for virtual and hybrid events? How do they work?

Breakout rooms are sometimes utilized, depending on the games that are played. Each event is different and the same games aren’t necessarily played at every event. In some cases, the group may be randomly divided into pairs or small groups and sent to breakout rooms to perform a designated task. For example, in the game “Life Story,” participants are put into pairs and sent to breakout rooms, where they have 2 minutes to tell each other their life story.

In these cases, one of our event facilitators will divide the group and send everyone to their breakout rooms. When time is up, everyone will automatically be brought back to the main session. The participants won’t have to do anything to move to and from the rooms and will always be in the right place at the right time.

+Is this a game where there's a winner at the end?

No, this is not a game and people don’t collect points or compete to win. This is an activity where teammates play games, build skills and connect with each other through the fun of improv!

+ ACTIVITY CONTENT

+Who is this for? What is the purpose of this activity?

This activity is for professional teams who are looking to learn and build skills, and form richer connections with each other in a fun and playful setting.

+Is this appropriate for a corporate audience? Will anyone be uncomfortable?

It is appropriate for corporate audiences. Our improv instructor and expert event facilitators have hosted many events for many different teams, and the activity itself features no mature content.

+Can we customize the event?

We are happy to work with you to provide the experience that you’re looking for and will do our best to accommodate your needs. Please schedule time with our event coordinators to discuss.
